New York GAA mourns the death of former chairman Seamus Dooley: A longtime representative of New York GAA, McCarthy became the first-ever candidate abroad to win the GAA Presidency in March. He will take over the leadership from John Horgan next year to lead Ireland's largest sporting organization as a whole. GAA Presidents serve three-year terms. Today he pays tribute to Seamus Dooley.

He is most famous for representing Ireland in the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest with the song Happy Man which he composed. He has since gained a following, performing traditional Irish songs in the US, where he now lives. Today, he launches his new novel Athenry: a historical romantic novel, for 175 years, has begged to be written. Athenry puts a human face on the Irish Famine, in an odyssey of sacrifice, survival and love.
